Ingredients

  • ½ cup smooth tahini paste
  • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 4 medium-to-large garlic cloves, finely minced or crushed
  • 6 tablespoons chilled water
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh parsley
  • A pinch of ground cumin powder

Method

  1. Making tahini sauce is a breeze. You just need a few simple steps to bring it all together. Let’s dive in!
Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients
  1. Look at your countertop. Make sure you have all the ingredients ready. Quality makes a difference, so aim for fresh garlic and lemon juice. If you've got everything, you’re halfway there!
Step 2: Combine the Tahini and Lemon Juice
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ½ cup of tahini paste and ¼ cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
  2. You might notice that the tahini thickens as you stir. No need to panic! It’s normal. This creates a rich base for your sauce. Mix until they’re well combined.
Step 3: Add the Garlic and Water
  1. Now, toss in your 4 finely minced garlic cloves. Then, add 6 tablespoons of chilled water gradually. Begin incorporation. This will get you that silky texture.
  2. As you add water, stir until you achieve your desired consistency. I often choose a somewhat looser sauce, as it clings well to vegetables.
Step 4: Incorporate Olive Oil and Seasoning
  1. Next, add 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil and ½ teaspoon of fine sea salt to the mix. Olive oil adds richness while salt enhances all the flavors at play. Stir well to combine completely.
Step 5: Finish with Parsley and Cumin
  1. Finally, sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh parsley and that pinch of ground cumin powder. Give it a final mix. This adds a touch of color and depth to your sauce.

Notes

Here are some tips to keep in mind while preparing your tahini sauce:
Use quality tahini: A fresh, high-quality tahini paste makes a huge difference.
Adjust garlic based on preference: Love garlic? Add more. Prefer it subtle? Use less.
Don’t skip fresh lemon juice: Bottled juice doesn’t hit the same.
Taste as you go: Adjust salt and lemon according to your preference.
Experiment: Try different herbs or spices to create your signature sauce.
