Method
Step 1: Prepare Your Ginger
- Begin by washing the ginger root thoroughly to remove any dirt. Then, peel the skin off with a spoon or a vegetable peeler.
- Next, slice the ginger into ½-inch thick pieces. This size will allow the flavors to infuse into the water effectively.
Step 2: Boil the Water
- In a pot, bring 5 cups of filtered water to a rolling boil. If you’re using a kettle, that works just as well. The goal is to have bubbling, hot water ready for the ginger.
Step 3: Steep the Ginger
- Once the water is boiling, add the sliced ginger to the pot. Stir in the ground cinnamon and ground turmeric for an extra flavor boost and health kick. Cover the pot and reduce the heat to a simmer.
- Allow the mixture to steep for about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how strong you want the flavor.
Step 4: Add Lemon and Mint
- After steeping, stir in half the lemon juice and add the fresh mint leaves. Let them steep with the ginger for a few more minutes to release their oils.
Step 5: Strain and Sweeten
- Once the tea has reached your desired level of strength, remove the pot from heat. Use a fine mesh strainer to filter out the ginger slices and mint leaves.
- Pour your tea into cups. Add the remaining lemon juice and honey to taste. If you like a little spice, sprinkle in a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
- Your fresh ginger tea is now ready! Serve it hot. You can also let it cool and enjoy it iced. Garnish with a mint leaf or a lemon slice for a touch of elegance if you fancy.
Notes
- Quality Matters: Use fresh ginger root for the best flavor; dried ginger won't pack the same punch.
- Mash It Up: If you want a stronger flavor, lightly pound the ginger slices before adding them to the water. This releases more of its natural oils.
- Herb Variations: Feel free to experiment with other herbs like basil or lemongrass for different flavor profiles.
- Sweeten Wisely: Taste your tea before adding honey. Sometimes the ginger is sweet enough on its own.
